Staffordshire bull terriers are very intelligent dogs and as a result respond really well to training and encouragement. Some Staffys have even performed well in obedience trails at Crufts one of the largest dog shows in the United Kingdom.

Staffordshire bull terrier puppies are renowned for being very people friendly. This works very much to the owners’ advantage as a young Staffy likes nothing more than pleasing their owners.

Similar to other breeds and dog training basics; Dog training should happen consistently and as soon as your Staffordshire bull terrier puppy arrives home.

Basic commands are all you need to start with. Such as sit and stay. This will help you maintain discipline and importantly keep your Staffy safe. Use food and praise as rewards for the achievements your puppy makes. Don’t make the training sessions long. Just ten to fifteen minutes is fine. This stops your puppy getting bored and maintains their level of enthusiasm.

Remember that your Staffy pup does not speak in human words or languages! Though over time they will get to understand certain words, they actually respond best to physicals signs and tone.

So for instance using a hand signal at the same time as using the word sit helps your puppy interpret what they are meant to do. When your puppy get it right make sure you praise or reward them, they them make the connection about the behaviour you expect of them.

Make sure you do some training with them every day. Consistency is the key. By scheduling in regular small sessions you will be amazed at how quick your Staffy pup will master the basics.
